AMD Executives Reveal PlayStation 4 Boosted Company’s Survival Amidst Collapse.

Renato Fragale, the Director of OEM Customer Business at AMD, revealed that the collaboration with Sony in developing chips for the PlayStation 4 helped AMD survive a predicted downfall in 2020. In his LinkedIn profile, Renato mentioned managing a team of 15 individuals from 2012 to 2014 to develop processing chips for Sony’s PlayStation 4, highlighting this project as one of AMD’s most successful in history. While AMD also developed chips for Microsoft on the Xbox One, Renato did not delve into specifics, possibly due to the Xbox One’s lower sales of about 58 million units compared to the PS4’s 117 million units.

Currently, AMD continues to design chips for both Sony and Microsoft in the upcoming PS5 and Xbox Series X/S gaming consoles. The PS5 has already surpassed 50 million units sold, while Microsoft has yet to officially announce sales figures for the Xbox Series X/S.

TLDR: Renato Fragale’s collaboration with Sony on PlayStation 4 chips saved AMD from a projected downfall, with AMD now also designing chips for the successful PS5 and upcoming Xbox Series X/S consoles.
