Google has announced a project to build a fiber network connecting Africa and Australia, called Umoja (meaning unity in Swahili). The network will start in Kenya, passing through Uganda, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa, serving as a major link due to Google’s data center in Johannesburg. It will then be subsea cabled across the Indian Ocean to Australia.
Umoja will connect with Google’s previous project, Equiano, linking Africa with Europe through Portugal, further enhancing connectivity and boosting the digital economy in the African region.
