Anticipated Decline of Traditional Search Engine Queries by 25% in 2026, Replaced by Chatbots

Market research company Gartner predicts that the volume of information searched through traditional search engines will decrease by 25% by 2026. The emerging trend is the shift towards searching via AI chatbots or other virtual agents.

Alan Antin, Gartner’s Vice President of Analysts, emphasizes the significance of this 25% decline. As digital marketing channels increasingly rely on search results, both organic and paid, the introduction of Generative AI (GenAI) as an alternative to traditional search will require a shift in digital marketing strategies.

However, Gartner acknowledges that traditional search still holds two strengths: the quality of accurate answers is higher compared to GenAI, and the results are original. GenAI’s approach of generating new content as answers will be a distinct difference in this aspect.
