Apple Secures a Triennial Extension for 5G Chip Delivery through Qualcomm’s Distinction Agreement

Qualcomm has announced that it has reached an agreement with Apple to deliver 5G Snapdragon modem chips for use in smartphones in 2024, 2025, and 2026, without disclosing the value of the deal.

This announcement is significant as both companies have been involved in a long-standing patent dispute. In 2019, it concluded with Apple paying Qualcomm and entering into a contract to purchase a certain number of chipsets. At the same time, there were news reports that Apple would not renew the contract and instead use its own internally designed chips by 2024. The fact that Apple is still entering into a contract could indicate that Apple’s plans to use solely internally developed chips have not materialized in the near future.

Moreover, Qualcomm estimates that it will deliver chips for 20% of the smartphones produced by Apple in 2026.

TLDR: Qualcomm and Apple have reached an agreement for Qualcomm to supply 5G Snapdragon modem chips for Apple’s smartphones in the coming years, with Apple estimated to utilize Qualcomm chips for 20% of its smartphones in 2026.
