Cease of iCloud Backup for iOS Devices running on Version 8 or Lower Takes Effect on December 18th.

Apple has notified users of devices running iOS 8 or lower that the iCloud data backup service will no longer be available for these devices. This means that new data cannot be backed up, access to existing data will be restricted, and data from these devices will be deleted starting December 18, 2024. However, if the data is still on the device, it can still be accessed as usual.

Apple’s straightforward recommendation is to update the device to iOS 9 or newer if the device supports it. iOS 9 is compatible with iPhone 4S and newer, iPad 2 and newer, and iPod touch 5th Gen and newer.

For devices that cannot be updated to a newer iOS version, data can be backed up using a Windows or macOS computer. Apple has provided step-by-step instructions for this process on their support page.

TLDR: Apple is discontinuing iCloud data backup for devices running iOS 8 or lower, recommending users to update to iOS 9 or newer for continued data backup support.
