CEO of Uber commends Tesla’s driverless Cybercab as a promising innovation in the taxi industry

Dara Khosrowshahi, the CEO of Uber, recently interviewed on the Hard Fork podcast, was questioned about Tesla’s driverless taxi service, Cybercab, which was just unveiled. Khosrowshahi mentioned that the vision for Cybercab providing driverless taxi services is quite intriguing, given that Tesla develops and manufactures its own vehicles, which could potentially offer taxi services through the Tesla app. However, if Tesla is interested in collaborating with Uber, they are open to it.

Khosrowshahi added that it is interesting because he is unsure whether Tesla wants to go down the path of owning a fleet of self-driving taxis and providing the service themselves, or opening it up for individuals to purchase Cybercabs and earn money by releasing them to operate as taxis, which could also potentially be a partnership with Uber (Elon Musk mentioned that they would pursue both avenues).

Currently, Uber has collaborations for driverless car services with Waymo and Cruise, and Khosrowshahi believes that this business model is not a winner-take-all market. Collaboration plays a significant role, and he believes that Waymo has a superior advantage over Tesla in providing driverless taxi services at the moment.
