Apple is set to unveil the new version of its operating system, iOS 18, at the upcoming WWDC event next week. According to recent reports, features related to AI are expected to involve collaboration with OpenAI. The latest information from Mark Gurman of Bloomberg provides further details on this deal.
Gurman mentioned that Apple has negotiated with several AI technology development companies after attempting to develop their own AI for the operating systems, iOS and iPadOS. This version is internally codenamed Crystal, with features that are not as prominent compared to AI from rival companies.
OpenAI is the company that Apple has focused the most negotiations on. The management at Apple believes that OpenAI’s technology is currently the best in the market. Choosing Google AI would be seen as supporting a competitor in the smartphone business, which is a core business of Apple.
However, Apple, which emphasizes on privacy as a selling point, might encounter issues when connecting to OpenAI’s services. Apple’s current approach is to make AI services opt-in, meaning users can choose to use them or not.
Gurman’s report also discusses the plan to integrate Generative AI into other aspects of Apple, such as creating desk-bound robots, mobile robots, and even incorporating it into AirPods. It is expected that Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, will join the keynote at WWDC to announce AI features, marking his second appearance on Apple’s stage. Previously, he appeared at WWDC in 2008 to showcase the usage of the app Check-In by Loopt, a startup he co-founded. After 16 years, Altman is returning to Apple’s event, but in a significantly different role.
TLDR: Apple to unveil iOS 18 at WWDC event with expected AI features developed in collaboration with OpenAI, focusing on opt-in services and potential integration with other Apple products. Sam Altman from OpenAI to join the keynote, making his second appearance at an Apple event.
