GNU Emacs, the legendary text editing software (truly legendary as it first released to the public in 1985), has launched a new version 30.1 (considered the first version of 30.x series). A significant new feature is that Emacs has been successfully ported to Android for the first time.
Using Emacs on Android requires compilation with the help of Android NDK (since Emacs is written in C). Currently, the GNU Emacs project has not distributed binaries or packages of Emacs for Android (those interested will have to compile it themselves). It remains to be seen whether the project will decide to officially package it or open it up for community users to do it themselves (previously, unofficial packages have been ported and available on F-Droid).
Another new feature in Emacs 30.1 is the built-in support for editing JSON files, eliminating the need for external libraries like libjansson.
