Facebook and Instagram slash monthly package prices for ad-free experience in EU region

Meta has announced changes that will specifically affect users in the European Union or EU on Facebook and Instagram. Currently, users have the option to subscribe to an ad-free package for €9.99 per month, but EU regulators say this violates consumer protection laws. Meta has stated that going forward, there will be two options similar to before: pay for no ads at a reduced price of 40% to €5.99 per month for a single service subscription via the web, with an additional €4 if you do not want ads on both Facebook and Instagram, which Meta claims is the most competitive price compared to rival platforms.

For free users, Meta will continue to display ads as usual, but will reduce the number of personalized ads shown based on user data to general ads. Meta also points out the downside that users may not be interested in those ads, resulting in less effective advertising. Nevertheless, these changes go beyond what the EU has requested.

TLDR: Meta is introducing new options for users in the EU, including ad-free subscriptions at a reduced price and less personalized ads for free users, in response to regulatory concerns.
