Shawn Layden, the former head of PlayStation Studios responsible for all game development in the zone (stepped down in 2019), has responded to criticism of Ghost of Yōtei, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, which features a female protagonist and has left some male gamers displeased.
Layden stated, “Ultimately, Ghost of Yōtei is a ‘game’ – a form of entertainment. The story of the game is what the team of creators believes in and wants to convey through the game. If it’s a game, and you don’t like it, then there’s no need to purchase it. Why not try creating the game you desire instead?”
Despite Layden’s departure from Sony for some time now, his past work overseeing large-scale game studios (including directly supervising Sucker Punch, the creators of the Ghost series) and his continuous criticism of the gaming industry have given him a significant voice in the gaming community.
TLDR: Shawn Layden defends Ghost of Yōtei’s creative direction and encourages dissatisfied gamers to create their own desired games.
