Impacts of Export Restrictions on Chip Delivery to China: AMD and Intel Take Notice

Yesterday, NVIDIA reported that the company had to incur an additional expense of $5.5 billion due to the United States issuing additional orders regarding the export licensing of chips to China, specifically covering the H20 chip that was previously exportable. This order has impacted products that were under agreed purchase orders or ready for sale.

Today, AMD filed an 8-K document with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as well, stating that this order affects the export of the GPU MI308 to China. AMD mentioned that the company will apply for an export license, but there is no guarantee of approval. It is anticipated that this order will lead to the company recording an expense for inventory write-down of around $800 million.

Reports indicate that Intel has informed customers about this new order, stating that chips subject to licensing must consider the bandwidth quantity in data transmission. This includes the company’s AI processing accelerator chip Gaudi falling into this category as well.
