India Orders WhatsApp to Pay $25.4 Million Fine for Data Sharing with Facebook – Meta Prepares for Battle

The regulatory body overseeing competition in India has imposed a fine of $25.4 million on Meta for sharing user data from WhatsApp for advertising purposes on other Meta platforms. Indian officials stated that data sharing between the apps is permissible but not for advertising.

India began investigating this issue back in 2021 when WhatsApp updated its terms of service, requiring users to accept data sharing with Facebook. Meta’s spokesperson clarified that the company will challenge the order, confirming that the changes in terms of service in 2021 did not compromise user privacy in any way.
