According to Bloomberg, the Stargate project will establish the first data center in Abilene, Texas, covering an area of approximately 875 acres, almost comparable to Central Park in New York. Upon completion, it is expected to be an AI-driven infrastructure supporting advanced AI usage of OpenAI.
However, this project is expected to create at least 57 full-time positions initially, with an average salary of $57,600 per year, while President Donald Trump and Big Tech executives participating in the funding suggest that the project will create more than 100,000 jobs in the United States.
In general, data center construction often generates fewer jobs than tech campuses. Despite requiring a large workforce during construction, once operational, data centers do not necessarily require a significant number of employees.
An OpenAI spokesperson mentioned that establishing a data center in Abilene is just the beginning for the Stargate project, which has plans to build data centers nationwide, creating hundreds of thousands of jobs, including electricians, carpenters, laborers, and truck drivers, similar to the construction of large-scale infrastructures in the past.
Furthermore, Abilene city officials are offering tax incentives for this project by providing an 85% property tax abatement for 20 years, with the condition that the data center must be completed by August 2026.
