Last year, Embracer Group, a conglomerate of gaming companies, made the decision to close Volition Games, the studio behind the popular Saints Row game series, citing financial difficulties. However, a group of Volition Games employees formed a new studio called Shapeshifter Games. Recently, they announced that they would be joining forces with InXile Games, a subsidiary of Microsoft, to collaborate on a new game project called Clockwork Revolution.
The reason behind Volition’s team joining InXile is due to the existing familiarity between the two management teams. Chris Keenan, the CEO of InXile, began his career as a game developer, working on the space combat game Descent developed by Parallax (which was known as Volition at that time). On the other hand, Brian Fargo, the head of InXile, founded Interplay, the distributor of Descent for Parallax (he left Interplay in 2000 and founded InXile in 2002).
TLDR: Embracer Group closed Volition Games last year, leading to the formation of Shapeshifter Games by a group of former Volition employees. Shapeshifter Games has now joined forces with InXile Games, a subsidiary of Microsoft, to collaborate on a new game project called Clockwork Revolution. The decision was based on the pre-existing relationship between the management teams of both studios. Chris Keenan, CEO of InXile, started his career at Volition, and Brian Fargo, head of InXile, founded Interplay, which distributed a game developed by Volition.
