Qualcomm has unleashed the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip, the next generation iteration of the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip used in last year’s Meta Quest 3. This new chip is expected to give Apple’s unreleased Vision Pro a run for its money.
The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip boasts some impressive specs, building upon the XR2 Gen 2 chip. These include support for a maximum resolution of 4.3K on both sides (matching the Vision Pro), a refresh rate of 90 Hz, a 15% boost in GPU power, and a whopping 20% increase in CPU performance. Additionally, it supports 12 cameras for motion detection, depth estimation, and AI-driven 3D imaging.
Qualcomm didn’t announce this chip alone; it brought Google and Samsung on board as partners. However, both Google and Samsung have encountered their fair share of challenges. Google is dealing with issues within its own AR team, while Samsung has reported hardware-related setbacks causing delays in development. In addition to these partnerships, Qualcomm is collaborating with at least five other OEM manufacturers, with HTC among them, to expedite hardware production.
TLDR: Qualcomm has revealed the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip, an upgraded version of the chip found in the Meta Quest 3. Anticipated to outmatch Apple’s Vision Pro, this chip offers impressive features such as high-resolution screens, increased GPU and CPU power, and advanced camera capabilities. Qualcomm joins forces with Google, Samsung, and other OEMs to tackle challenges and accelerate hardware production.
