Linux Mint has released a major version 22.0 with the code name Wilma (the first in the W series). It is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS as per their development policy which follows the LTS version of Ubuntu released every two years. Linux Mint 22 will be the base for minor versions (22.x) until the year 2026 and will have extended support until the year 2029.
Significant changes include upgrading software versions to match Ubuntu 24.04 such as Kernel 6.8, switching the theme system to GTK4, introducing a new sound management system called PipeWire, updating several software to GTK4 or removing them from the system, and updating the desktop system Cinnamon to version 6.2.
The language pack installation process has been revamped to remove unused languages during installation, saving more disk space. The Software Manager now operates faster, with quicker downloads, and enhanced security policies have been implemented to notify about the installation of unverified Flatpak packages. The chat software has been switched to Matrix chat.
