In the midst of all the buzz, VR Spatial Computing is once again gaining attention with the release of Apple Vision Pro glasses. On the flip side, Microsoft, one of the major players, is starting to phase out VR features in Windows 11, as previously announced. The newly released Windows 11 Insider Build 26052 (part of the 26XXX branch) no longer supports Windows Mixed Reality headsets from other OEM manufacturers (excluding Microsoft’s own HoloLens, which still remains compatible).
Microsoft also mentioned that users with older Mixed Reality headsets will still be able to use them for gaming with Steam until 2026, but only if they stick with the Windows 11 v23H2 version. Upgrading to a version beyond that (such as 24H2) will render the headsets unusable as well.
The most recent Windows Mixed Reality headset available for purchase is the HP Reverb G2, which was released in 2020.
TLDR: The exciting VR Spatial Computing trend sees a resurgence with the launch of Apple Vision Pro glasses, while Microsoft is phasing out VR features in Windows 11, excluding their own HoloLens. The latest Windows Mixed Reality headset, HP Reverb G2, was released in 2020. Upgrading beyond Windows 11 v23H2 will render older headsets incompatible. Steam gaming support will be available until 2026.
