Hotel Barcelona is a new game collaboration between renowned Japanese game designers Hidetaka “Swery” Suehiro (Deadly Premonition, D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die) and Goichi “Suda51” Suda (No More Heroes, Lollipop Chainsaw, Shadows of the Damned). The gameplay format is a 2.5D action slasher with a parodic twist, inspired by iconic horror films from the past.
The protagonist, a female character wielding a Japanese sword, embarks on a continuous journey to hunt down multiple killers in the United States. The game draws inspiration from various horror subgenres, such as masked baseball player killers, giant sharks, haunted dolls, and extraterrestrial beings.
One of the game’s highlights is its death loop gameplay, where players must die and replay the game in a popular post-game trend. However, Hotel Barcelona introduces a new concept called “Slasher Phantom,” which incorporates our character’s “shadow” from previous loops to assist in the current gameplay loop. The attacks made in previous loops also affect the current loop, making the game more accessible and dynamic. Players can have up to three shadows simultaneously.
The game is set to release on Xbox Series X|S in 2024, with no information yet regarding other platforms.
