Currently, Turkey is embroiled in a political controversy following the arrest of Ekrem İmamoğlu, the mayor of Istanbul and political rival of President Tayyip Erdoğan, on charges of fraud, embezzlement, and links to organized crime. This has sparked protests from supporters of İmamoğlu and the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP).
According to Politico, social media platform X or Twitter has reportedly banned accounts of İmamoğlu supporters and student protest leaders. The ban seems to only affect X users in Turkey, while users outside the country still have normal access.
Ali Yerlikaya, Turkey’s Minister of Interior, announced that the government has identified 326 accounts spreading hate speech and have detained 54 individuals suspected of being linked to these accounts.
Politico reached out to company X for comment but received no response.
TLDR: Turkey’s political turmoil escalates as İmamoğlu’s arrest leads to protests, social media bans, and government crackdown on hate speech accounts.
