Resident Opposition in Akishima, Japan against Data Center Construction Impacts Ecosystem forest Systems

In Akishima, a city located west of Tokyo, over 220 families have signed a petition against the construction of a data center and logistic facility by Singapore-based GLP. The opposition is aimed at meeting the business needs of customers in Japan.

This resistance is not unique in Japan. Previously, residents in Nagareyama, Chiba Prefecture, have also opposed the construction of a large-scale data center successfully.

The planned data center in Akishima is projected to consume 3.63 megawatts of electricity, emitting an estimated 1.8 million tons of carbon annually. This has raised concerns among the local population about the environmental impact on wildlife in the forest, as construction would involve clearing approximately 3,000-4,800 trees and may lead to water shortages due to the circulation requirements for the data center. Akishima officials and GLP have not commented on the matter.

TLDR: Residents in Akishima oppose the construction of a data center due to environmental concerns and potential impact on wildlife and water resources.
