Rumored: Microsoft Develops its Own Large-Scale Model ‘MAI’ to Replace OpenAI Successfully

Bloomberg reports that Microsoft has developed its own large-scale language model called MAI, which can be used to replace OpenAI’s GPT models in Microsoft services like Copilot. According to Bloomberg, Microsoft is internally testing MAI and the results show that it is on par with models from OpenAI or Anthropic. In addition to standard language models, Microsoft also has a reasoning model in development.

A Microsoft spokesperson mentioned that the company’s policy is to use a variety of models and that their relationship with OpenAI remains strong. It is evident that Microsoft aims to become more self-reliant in the AI model space and not overly dependent on OpenAI. They have brought Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder of DeepMind, to work as the CEO of Microsoft AI. On the other hand, Microsoft has its own small-scale language model called Phi. The only thing missing is a large-scale model with high capabilities like GPT.

TLDR: Microsoft has developed its own language model MAI to potentially replace OpenAI’s GPT models in their services, signaling a move towards self-reliance in the AI space.
