Spotify Releases App Update on App Store, Introducing Alternative Payment Channels Following Court Mandate for Apple Compliance

Following the recent ruling by the US court that found Apple guilty of blocking alternative payment methods on the App Store, the key players at Apple have sprung into action. Starting with the frontrunner in the scene, Epic Games, the drama continues with Spotify making their move today.

Spotify has announced the submission of an updated app to Apple for approval on the US App Store. This updated version showcases the pricing of Spotify Premium packages and provides links to purchase them directly, such as the Individual, Student, Duo, and Family plans. Users can now pay using methods other than Apple’s own payment channels.

While Spotify argues that these options benefit consumers, they have previously been unable to implement them despite a court ruling dating back to 2021. Apple has persistently fought against complying with the ruling or evading it altogether, until the latest court order yesterday forced Apple to immediate action.

The next step involves Apple reviewing and approving apps for the App Store, similar to what transpired in Europe where Spotify had previously requested a similar update, eventually gaining approval from Apple albeit after some delay.
