Straying from the Ordinary: Instagram and Threads Disapprove and Conceal Political Posts from Unfollowed Accounts

Instagram and Threads have announced guidelines for managing political content, with no recommendations or posts shown to non-followers. If the content is political and affects all areas, including the feed, Explore, and Reels, we may see more news about managing social media platforms and political content this year, as there are a large number of national elections worldwide, especially the US Presidential Election at the end of the year.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, further explained that content limitations are part of the recommended content shown. If users already follow accounts that post political content, those posts will be displayed as normal because they’re from followed accounts. However, if users want to see suggested political content as they would with other types of posts, they can customize their settings. There will soon be a section called “Suggested Content” with the option to freely choose the display of Political Content.

TLDR: Instagram and Threads will not recommend or show non-followers any posts related to political content. However, if users follow accounts that post such content, those posts will appear as usual. Users can customize their settings to see suggested political content as they would with other posts. This change comes in light of the upcoming national elections worldwide.
