The Decline in Popularity of the Prompt Engineer Role Due to Improved AI Understanding of Prompts

According to the Wall Street Journal, the once coveted profession of Prompt Engineer in 2023 is now experiencing a lack of interest. This is due to AI advancements that have enabled machines to understand human language without the need for specialized experts to create prompts. Users of AI platforms are also becoming more proficient in writing prompts.

Citing Microsoft’s Work Trends report for 2025, organizations are expected to create new positions in the field of AI in the next 12-18 months. While Prompt Engineer held the second spot in the previous year, it has now plummeted to the bottom of the list. The trending positions are now AI trainer, AI data specialist, and AI security specialist.

Indeed job search statistics mirror this trend, with searches for Prompt Engineer positions dropping from 144 million per month in April 2023 to 20-30 million per month. Many companies are opting not to open Prompt Engineer positions from the start, instead choosing to develop their existing employees’ prompt writing skills.
