The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission gives the green light for Prince of Songkla University to embark upon an inaugural 6-month trial of Starlink, marking Thailand’s debut utilization of the pioneering satellite Internet service.

On December 25th, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) approved the trial use of Starlink, the satellite internet network owned by SpaceX, for Songkhla Nakharin University (SONU). This marks the first time in Thailand that such internet service will be utilized.

The approved frequency band for the trial is Ku Band. The uplink frequency range will be from 14 to 14.5 GHz, while the downlink frequency range will be from 10.7 to 12.7 GHz. The main objective of this experiment is to support search and rescue missions at sea and other remote areas where there is no terrestrial network coverage. The trial period will last for six months.

Currently, Starlink provides internet coverage in 70 countries worldwide. SpaceX has stated that they are awaiting approval from the Thai government for the service in Thailand. The closest countries to Thailand where Starlink is already available are Malaysia. Laos and Cambodia are expected to receive the service by 2025.
