Tesla electric cars in the United States and Canada use their own proprietary charging connector, unlike the CCS connector which is becoming a global standard. Tesla is striving to make their charging connector the North American Charging Standard (NACS) to prevent other car manufacturers from using the CCS connector, which would make the Tesla connector obsolete. In exchange, any electric vehicle that uses the NACS connector would be able to charge at Tesla Supercharger stations across the country. This plan seems to be succeeding as several US car manufacturers such as Ford, GM, and Rivian have started signing agreements to use the NACS connector. Recently, Toyota, a major player in the automotive industry, has also joined forces with Tesla, agreeing to use the NACS connector in their electric cars starting in 2025. This means that Toyota and Lexus electric vehicles will be able to utilize over 12,000 Supercharger stations throughout North America. Furthermore, current electric vehicles using the CCS connector can also be retrofitted with the NACS connector.
In mid-2021, the state of Texas, where Tesla’s main office is located, announced that all electric vehicle DC charging stations must have at least one CCS and one NACS connector. Texas is the first state in the United States to implement such a requirement.
TLDR: Tesla is working on establishing their own charging connector, called NACS, as the North American standard, while preventing other car manufacturers from using the CCS connector. They have secured agreements with various car manufacturers, including Toyota, and are retrofitting existing electric vehicles with the NACS connector. Additionally, Texas has become the first state in the US to enforce the inclusion of both CCS and NACS connectors at charging stations.
