The ruling by a US court determined that Napoleon Gonzalez was guilty of fraud after officials used face recognition technology to discover that Gonzalez possessed two social security numbers and used both numbers to claim various benefits.
It was revealed that Gonzalez had multiple documents, including passports and identification cards, for both identities. Notably, Gonzalez used the information of his deceased brother, Guillermo Gonzalez, who passed away in 1939, as an additional identity since 1965. Having two identities allowed Gonzalez to claim retirement benefits twice for a total of 20 years.
This incident came to light when officials ran the face recognition system in the driver’s license database and found two identical images of a person, leading to an investigation in early 2020. Gonzalez has stated that he will contest the case in the future.
