Exploring Qualcomm’s Empowering Chipset: The Core Driving Force behind Meta Quest 3 and Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glass

Meta has just launched the Meta Quest 3, along with the announcement of the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glass, both of which are powered by Qualcomm chips. The Quest 3 features the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, while the Ray-Bans utilize the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1, both equipped with AI capabilities.

The Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 boasts a more powerful GPU compared to its predecessor, with a two-fold increase in performance. It supports high-resolution displays and encompasses head, hand, and object motion tracking, marking Qualcomm’s first foray into 6DoF motion detection.

Qualcomm claims that this chip can process full-color video with an average latency of just 12 milliseconds, which is as fast as the R1 chip in Apple’s Vision Pro. However, Qualcomm cautions that the latency depends on the resolution and speed of the object being detected, emphasizing that it’s fast enough for table tennis gameplay. In summary, the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 offers a 2.5x improvement in GPU performance, an 8x improvement in AI performance, and a 50% enhancement in GPU power efficiency.

As for the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glass, it utilizes the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1, which focuses on photography, video, and smart features comparable to those found in smartphones. Designed to be lightweight and sleek, the glasses operate at a power level below 1 watt.

Theoretically, the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 can display two screens with a resolution of 1280 x 1280, capture images at 12MP, and record videos at 6MP. It supports turn-by-turn navigation, real-time language translation, voice commands, and hands-free search. In practical terms, Meta’s glasses can receive voice commands, capture 12-megapixel photos, and record 1080p 30fps videos. Meta claims that the battery can last for 4 to 6 hours on a single charge.

Both of these chips are manufactured using 4-nanometer technology and support Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth.

TLDR: Meta has launched the Meta Quest 3 with the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip offering improved performance. The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glass, powered by the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1, focuses on photography and smart features. Qualcomm claims both chips have enhanced capabilities and power efficiency.
