Market Dominance: Huawei Reigns Supreme in Chinese Smartphone Market, Apple Falls to 5th Place

Yesterday, Counterpoint released a report, and this time it’s Canalys with their analysis of the smartphone market in China for the first quarter of 2024. They reported that a total of 67.7 million devices were shipped, a number close to the previous year’s quarter, compared to the global market growth of 11%. However, these figures reflect a recovery of the smartphone market in China after continuous declines over several quarters.

Canalys’ market share data differs significantly from Counterpoint’s report. Huawei held the top spot with a 17% market share, increasing from the previous year to 70% with 11.7 million devices. Following behind were OPPO, HONOR, and vivo in the 2nd to 4th positions, while Apple slipped to 5th place with 10.0 million devices, a 25% decrease with a 15% market share.

Analyst Lucas Zhong from Canalys mentioned that smartphones featuring Generative AI will be a selling point for premium models in China this year, posing a challenge for Apple in the market. Canalys estimates that AI-enabled smartphones will capture 12% of the total market sales this year, with major smartphone brands in China gradually introducing this feature.

TLDR: Canalys reported on the smartphone market in China, showing a recovery with 67.7 million devices shipped in the first quarter of 2024. Huawei leads with a 17% market share, while AI-enabled smartphones are expected to drive sales in the Chinese market.
