The Threads platform by Meta emphasizes text-based communication and recently showcased how post bridging works in the Fediverse for the first time. This feature of Threads, announced since its launch, allows a post on Threads to reach a wider audience and cross over to other platforms more effectively.
Presented by Peter Cottle from Meta at the online FediForum seminar, users must enable sharing to the Fediverse in Settings. This includes an explanation of what the Fediverse is and the impact users need to be aware of beforehand.
Users on Threads must set their posts to public if they wish to connect with other services in the Fediverse. During the demonstration, Cottle explained several limitations being addressed by the team. For instance, users cannot see replies from other platforms, only likes; if the original post on Threads is deleted, there’s no guarantee it will also be removed from other platforms, as this is a limitation of the Fediverse itself.
Threads delay posts to other services in the Fediverse for 5 minutes to accommodate users who may want to make changes or have a change of heart about posting. Additionally, users who share to the Fediverse will have icons on their profile indicating which services their posts have been shared to, allowing followers to easily explore and follow them on different platforms.
Threads has not yet specified when they will begin allowing cross-platform posts.
