Restrictions Imposed by Microsoft on Xbox Media Storage and Retention, Allowing a Mere 90-Day Lifespan Prior to Permanent Deletion

Microsoft has issued a notification within the Xbox app on mobile devices stating that game clips or screenshots uploaded to the Xbox network will be deleted after 90 days. Microsoft advises users to back up any images or clips they wish to keep.

Users can back up game clips or images from their console or PC by saving them to an external drive or uploading them to OneDrive. The USB drive used must be formatted as NTFS and cannot be the same drive as the one used for game installations, as their formats differ.

Previously, when users saved images or clips within a game, the clips and images would be uploaded to the Xbox network, allowing users to view or download them through the Xbox app on mobile or PC without any time restrictions. This change is similar to the PlayStation app on mobile, where images and clips can only be stored for 14 days before being deleted.

This change took effect on October 1st and the deletion of clips and images from the Xbox network will begin in January 2024.

TLDR: Microsoft has notified Xbox app users that game clips and screenshots uploaded to the Xbox network will be deleted after 90 days. Users are advised to back up their images and clips.
