Sony and Nintendo have dominated the gaming market in the United States in August. The best-selling game was Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, followed by Super Mario Bros. Wonder. According to analyst Mat Piscatella’s report for Circana, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 ranks number four in 2023, despite being on the market for only one month. It is also the best-selling game in October in the United States, with global sales exceeding 5 million copies.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder, on the other hand, takes second place, with a global total of 4.3 million copies sold. It breaks records as the highest-selling Super Mario game during its launch.
Other games on the chart include Assassin’s Creed Mirage in third place, UFC 5 at seventh, HNL at eighth, Sonic Superstars at ninth, Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol.1 at twelfth, Forza Motorsport at seventeenth, and Lords of the Fallen at twentieth.
Notably, Alan Wake 2 does not make any rank in game sales for October, mainly because the distributor Epic Games is not part of the Data Loss Prevention system. This leads to digital game sales not being counted. Additionally, Alan Wake 2 is not within the top 150 games played in October on platforms such as PlayStation and Xbox.
In terms of gaming consoles, PlayStation 5 remains the highest-selling, followed by Xbox Series S/X and Nintendo Switch, respectively.
Statistics indicate that consumer spending in the United States for gaming hardware, content, and accessories decreased by 5% in October compared to the previous year. Part of this decline is attributed to the delay of Call of Duty’s sales from October to November this year.
