Volition Games, the studio behind the popular Saints Row series, has announced its closure after 30 years in operation. Originally known as Parallax Software, Volition Games began with the release of the Descent series in 1995. In addition to Descent, the studio’s other notable titles include FreeSpace, Summoner, Red Faction, and the Saints Row series. However, the reboot of Saints Row in 2022 did not achieve success, with an average review score of 65/100.
In 2013, Volition Games sold its assets to Deep Silver, a subsidiary of Koch Media. Koch Media was then acquired in 2018 and merged into the Embracer Group, a Swedish gaming conglomerate that has acquired numerous game companies.
However, Embracer recently faced financial issues and was unable to raise funds as planned. This led to restructuring and layoffs, ultimately resulting in the closure of Volition Games. Just a short time after celebrating its 30th anniversary, the studio now faces permanent closure.
