Google Announces Extended 7-Year Upgrading Policy for Pixel 8, Encompassing OS, Patches, and Features

Google has announced a software update policy for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, extending for a staggering 7 years. This aligns with previous rumors that the Pixel 8 series, set to launch in 2023, will receive updates all the way until 2030.

Google’s 7-year policy will encompass operating system upgrades, security patches, and feature updates called Feature Drops. The tech giant emphasizes that smartphone users are holding on to their devices for longer, prompting them to collaborate with relevant partners to ensure long-term software updates. This includes establishing a robust foundation for testing.

Another notable change is the discontinuation of monthly security patch releases on fixed dates (1st and 5th of the month) for Android. Google has opted not to provide a specific date anymore, instead releasing patches when they are ready. However, this policy applies exclusively to Google’s own Pixel products.

TLDR: Google extends its software update policy for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro to a remarkable 7 years, including OS upgrades, security patches, and Feature Drops. The company aims to meet the extended use of smartphones by collaborating with partners and improving their testing infrastructure. Additionally, Google discontinues specifying exact dates for monthly security patch releases, instead releasing them when prepared. This policy solely applies to Google’s Pixel devices.
